Hera Backup is a backup, restore and staging plugin for WordPress, built around the part that matters most: getting your site back.

What it does

  • Backs up the whole site, or only the parts you tick: the database, themes, plugins, media library, must-use plugins and the rest of wp-content.
  • Leaves out caches, logs and temporary files, and anything else you exclude.
  • Runs a daily backup at a time you choose. Each schedule keeps the last backups, five unless you change it, and each destination can have its own limit.
  • Writes each backup as one .hera archive with a manifest and SHA-256 checksums, which you can check again at any time.
  • Saves a copy of the database before a restore, and puts it back automatically if the restore fails. Afterwards, every table is checked against the row counts recorded in the backup.
  • Stores backups on your own server, or sends them to Amazon S3, S3-compatible storage, Google Drive, Dropbox or FTP.
  • Imports a backup of another site, from your cloud storage or from a .hera file on your computer, uploaded in pieces. The import keeps this site’s address and your login, and a backup of this site is taken first, so you can undo it.
  • Makes a staging copy of your site in a subfolder, and moves a site to a new address.

What it leaves out

  • It needs no account and has no licence check. It connects to a storage provider only after you enter that provider’s details.
  • Google Drive and Dropbox need app credentials that you create with Google or Dropbox.
  • It does not encrypt backups.
  • A restore puts back everything the backup contains. Files are overwritten, not deleted, and the copy saved first covers the database only, so files written by a failed restore stay on disk. For the same reason, a restore is not a way to clean up a hacked site.
  • It reads its own .hera archives, not backups made by other plugins.
