Getting alerts on Telegram

Once the site is connected to HeraPress, HeraPress can send the site’s alerts to a Telegram chat as well as by email. This article shows how to link a chat or a group, what arrives there and how to stop it.

Link a chat

  1. Open Site Monitor. In the HeraPress card, under Alerts this week, click Connect Telegram.
    The button shows once the site is connected and HeraPress’s Telegram bot is available.
  2. Scan the QR code with your phone’s camera, or click Open Telegram on a computer with Telegram installed. Telegram opens the HeraPress Alerts bot.
  3. Tap Start. The bot asks “Send alerts for example.com to this chat?” Tap Connect.
  4. The Site Monitor screen updates by itself and says Telegram is linked, with how to stop the alerts in that chat. HeraPress also emails your HeraPress account to say that a chat now receives the site’s alerts.

The code works once, for 10 minutes. If neither the QR code nor the link works for you, send the code shown under them to the bot. When the code runs out, the card says This code has expired. Click Get a new code for another.

The screen watches for the link for 30 minutes after you ask for a code. After that it says it has stopped watching; click Reload this screen to see whether the chat is linked.

Link a group

Click Add to a group instead of Open Telegram, then choose the group in Telegram. Only the person who added the bot can tap Connect.

On the free plan, a site’s alerts go to your HeraPress account’s email address and to one Telegram chat. A group counts as one chat, so a group can bring the alerts to several people, a client included. Once that chat is linked, the HeraPress card says so: to use another chat, unlink this one first (see below). If a chat was linked meanwhile and you click Connect Telegram, HeraPress refuses to give a code and the card shows its message.

To check that alerts reach the chat, click Send a test alert in the HeraPress card. HeraPress sends one test message to every email address and Telegram chat the site’s alerts go to.

What arrives in the chat

Every alert HeraPress sends by email arrives in the chat too. HeraPress alerts you when:

  • the site stops answering, and again when it answers;
  • Hera Site Monitor finds a fatal error or a broken page on the site;
  • visitors see a maintenance or coming soon page at two checks in a row, and again when they see the site;
  • an update stays stuck halfway, with WordPress’s maintenance message showing;
  • a page looks different from its approved look, with the before and after picture.

Buttons under an alert:

  • Open report opens the site’s page in your HeraPress dashboard.
  • Looks fine, under a changed page, accepts its new look.
  • Mute 1 h and Mute 24 h pause the site’s alerts for that long.

Stop the alerts in a chat

Send /sites to the bot in that chat. It lists the sites the chat receives alerts for, each with buttons to mute or unlink it. You can also unlink a chat on the site’s page in your HeraPress dashboard.

What is sent

The plugin asks HeraPress for the one-time code and shows it only in your browser, where the QR code is drawn. The code is not stored on your site. The plugin never contacts Telegram: your phone or browser does, when you open the link or scan the code.
